Evelyn Underhill in her book “The Spiritual Life” made the following statement.“ The Church is in the world to save the world. It is a tool of God for that purpose; not a comfortable religious club established in fine historical premises. Every one of its members is required, in one way or another, to cooperate with the Spirit in working for that great end….How impossible and un-Christian it is to keep ourselves to ourselves.”
Here at St. Luke we have a vision of “Jesus Christ in every life.” As a church we seek to be about doing what Evelyn Underhill reminds us the church should do. It can only be accomplished when every member shares in the effort.
Some people are offended by any mention of the word stewardship. Their interpretation of that word is tied to the church wanting more of their money. This narrow focus results in a negative response. In reality the intent of a stewardship emphasis is far greater and more demanding than money alone.
As members of St. Luke we vowed to support the church with our prayers, presence, gifts, and service. Every time new members join the church, we affirm again that this is our intent. The stewardship emphasis is simply a reminder to all of us that we share the responsibility of helping St. Luke to be faithful to the task of the preaching, teaching, healing ministry of Jesus Christ in the world. According to our text, it is required of all of us that we be found trustworthy. You are vital to the purpose!
